Witney trains to London: 1h 3m and £7,156 a year

Witney has not had a passenger train since 18 June 1962, when the Oxford to Fairford branch closed. So the honest answer to “what time is the train from Witney to London” is that there isn’t one, and the real question is which of four stations you drive or bus to first.

The nearest is Hanborough, at Long Hanborough about six miles east of Witney on the Cotswold Line. From there the fastest direct service to London Paddington takes 1 hour 3 minutes, and an annual season ticket costs £7,156.

The four ways out, compared

Read the last two columns together, because that is where the decision sits. The station closest to Witney is also the dearest per mile and has the fewest parking spaces of any of them. Hanborough’s 48 spaces serve a station that is the default railhead for a town of more than 30,000 people plus the villages around it.

Going further gets cheaper. An annual season from Oxford Parkway to Marylebone costs £6,552, which is £604 less than Hanborough to Paddington for a journey five minutes longer, and Oxford Parkway has 830 spaces. Charlbury is the outlier in the other direction: at £8,780 a year it costs £1,624 more than Hanborough for seven extra minutes.

Hanborough to Paddington in detail

Great Western Railway runs the Cotswold Line service through Hanborough. Most trains call at Oxford, Didcot Parkway and Reading, and the direct ones reach Paddington in just over an hour. From the timetable for Tuesday 11 August 2026:

Two things stand out. The service is roughly hourly rather than turn-up-and-go, so a missed train is an hour lost, not ten minutes. And there is no meaningful time penalty for travelling off-peak: the fastest run of the morning is the 11:20.

What a ticket costs

Season tickets are the big number, but most people are not commuting five days a week any more. These are the walk-up fares from Hanborough, as quoted by National Rail:

The gap between the Anytime Return at £93.40 and the Super Off-Peak at £44.10 is more than double, so on a flexible day the departure you pick is worth more than the railcard you hold.

If you need the Tube as well, the Travelcard versions cost more: £212.10 a week, £796.80 a month or £8,300 a year from Hanborough, which is £1,144 a year on top for zones 1 to 6. Work out whether your London walk is really a Tube ride before paying it.

Getting to the station

Hanborough has 48 car parking spaces including 6 accessible bays, step-free access to both platforms, and bicycle hire on site. Given the space count, most regular commuters either arrive early or get dropped off.

Stagecoach’s S1 and S2 run between Witney and Oxford along the A40 rather than to Hanborough, so they are the route to Oxford station and the city centre, not to the Cotswold Line. The S1 runs every 15 minutes Monday to Saturday between Witney and Oxford; the S2 runs hourly and serves Curbridge on some journeys.
