Chipping Norton has not yet set its 2026 switch-on. Last year's Big Chippy Switch-On ran 4pm to 8pm on Thursday 27 November, with the lights on at 6pm.

Chipping Norton Town Council has not yet announced its 2026 Christmas lights switch-on. Its October 2026 newsletter, published on 30 September, does not mention it, and its events page lists nothing for November or December. This page will be updated as soon as the date is out.

Last year’s event is the best guide to what to expect. The council’s November 2025 newsletter set the Big Chippy Christmas Lights Switch-On for Thursday 27 November 2025, 4pm to 8pm, in the town centre, with the lights on at 6pm.

The quick answer

  • Is it on this year? Not announced yet. The 2025 date was published in the council’s November newsletter, so the 2026 details may not appear until early November.
  • Last year: Thursday 27 November 2025, 4pm to 8pm, lights on at 6pm.
  • Christmas market: there was none in 2025. The council has said nothing yet about 2026.

What happened in 2025

Date Thursday 27 November 2025
Event 4pm to 8pm, town centre
Lights on 6pm
Organiser Chipping Norton Town Council
Main feature The Big Chippy Christmas Singalong

The council’s newsletter promised the Big Chippy Christmas Singalong, with local singing groups and Chipping Norton Choral Society, WRFM broadcasting live, festive refreshments and a visit from Father Christmas.

Why there was no Christmas market

In the same newsletter the council said: “While we won’t be holding the usual Christmas Market this year due to increased costs linked to car-parking suspensions, the Co-op has generously applied for community funding to support this year’s Switch On event.”

That matters for 2026. Whether the market comes back depends on the same costs, and the council has not said. If you are planning a Christmas shopping trip to Chipping Norton, do not count on a market until it is announced.

Roads and parking

Chipping Norton’s district council car parks are on New Street (121 spaces, OX7 5LJ) and Albion Street (51 spaces, OX7 5BN), both with a 12-hour maximum stay. West Oxfordshire’s council car parks are free; our parking page has the full list.

No road closure has been ordered for a 2026 switch-on. Oxfordshire County Council’s large public events register, checked on 2 October 2026, lists no Chipping Norton event after September’s Mop Fair. Our roadworks and travel page will carry any order.

Already confirmed in Chipping Norton this Christmas

The Theatre’s pantomime, The Snow Queen, opens with previews on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 November and runs into January, according to the theatre. Our pantomime page compares it with Witney’s.
